FLORAL PHOTO COLLAGE

I have taken photos of flowers since I was old enough to hold a camera in my hands. I have done digital collage making since the 1990’s. However, taking photos of flowers and plants specifically as ‘source’ material for my flower collages, I’ve only done since about 2015. Interestingly, flowers only appeared on the planet during the Cretaceous Period (195-66 million years ago). Before that, the plant world was a monochromatic world of green. The suddenness of their appearance even puzzled Darwin, who called their appearance “an abominable mystery” and he never could figure out how they came about. But flowers also brought cross-pollination, new seeds, the development of fruits and a whole gamut of complex new life…which has so enriched our lives today.

These square images are 40”x40”and made between 2016-2021 and are acrylic dibond mounted and are ready for hanging. I like how the high gloss surface of the acrylic gives a sense of unnatural remove from the flowers, a kind of dichotomy between the subject matter and the presentation of the image.
